“Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this white waitress came up to me and said, "We don't serve colored people here." I said, "That's all right. I don't eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.”
- Dick Gregory
Got this email a few weeks ago from Ali G. (Not the comedian) about Dick Gregory (the comedian) and fasting:
hope this finds you well.
i started my am fasting again, and on that day, i was listening to joe morton on wnyc, he is playing dick gregory on broadway, and he speaks to the link between fasting, health and social justice, it's cool if you have a minute @ minute 12:00.
your newsletters mean so much, and my intention for this summer to start sending a regular one out too, so there is that inspiration too.
i wish for you and yours to have a great wkend
Alicia, thanks for the email and sorry for the two week work induced break from sending out the newsletters. I’ll be back on it weekly for a good stretch to come.
I had never heard of Dick Gregory before you sent me the link. The radio show was fascinating. It mentions how Dick Gregory got into natural diets when he started fasting in protest of the Vietnam war. He ended up incorporating fasting into his health toolkit but in such a way that he wouldn’t get sick in the way Gandhi did.
