This is a picture of me with my brother-in-law's grandmother, who they simply call “Ba”. She was part of Gandhi’s entourage for an number of years in the mid-1940’s and even went to prison with Gandhi’s wife in support of his movement to liberate India.
When I asked her about Gandi’s political fasts, she said that there whenever things didn’t move in the right direction, Gandhi would stop eating and everybody in the country would stop working or protesting violently and that would be that.
I’m not advocating fasting for political change, and definitely not advocating long fasts beyond a single day, but it’s fascinating that Gandi used fasting as his primary tactic for political change, and even more fascinating that it worked.
Happy fasting for personal change.
